Asherman Syndrome Causes Symptoms and Treatments

Adhesions, or intrauterine adhesions, refer to scar tissue. This tissue develops inside your uterus in a rare condition called Asherman's syndrome. All that extra tissue creates a smaller area inside your uterus.

Symptoms of Asherman Syndrome

Several symptoms may show Asherman's syndrome. Among these symptoms are some of the following:

  • Having hypomenorrhea or light periods.
  • Experiencing unusual uterine bleeding or not getting a period (amenorrhea).
  • Feeling painful pelvic pain or cramps.
  • Having trouble becoming or retaining pregnancies.

Causes of Asherman Syndrome

Asherman's syndrome can result from the following causes:

In an "operative hysteroscopy," your doctor inserts a camera into your uterus. Then, they use an electric tool to cut out a fibroid tumor.

Dilation and curettage are two kinds of surgery. It involves dilation (opening the cervix) and cauterization (removing tissue from the uterus). This tissue may come from an abortion or miscarriage, or it may be the endometrium. During the procedure, a tool scrapes out the excess tissue.

Doctors perform a C-section to deliver a baby. Scar tissue could grow after a c-section in certain situations. You had an infection at the time of the procedure. Doctors have placed stitches to stop bleeding during a cesarean section. This may occur.

Infections: Asherman's condition rarely comes on from infections on its own. But Asherman's syndrome may occur if you get an infection during uterine surgery. Asherman's syndrome may arise from various infections. These include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and a condition called.

Radiation therapy will cause scar tissue to form in your uterus. Doctors may use radiation therapy to treat diseases. This includes cervical cancer. But it can also cause adhesions and scar tissue. These can lead to Asherman's syndrome.

Diagnosis and Tests

Doctors diagnose Asherman's syndrome based on symptoms. These include pelvic pain and irregular uterine bleeding, amenorrhea (no menstruation), and trouble getting and staying pregnant. Based on your medical history, you could also diagnose Asherman's syndrome. If you have had radiation, a c-section, a D&C, or a pelvic infection, your doctor may check you for Asherman's syndrome.

After that, your provider will examine you. But first, they will do a sonohysterogram to look for scar tissue in your uterus. Your doctor will use a small catheter. They will use it to put a bit of saline into your uterus during a sonohysterogram. After that, transvaginal ultrasound checks for tissue obstructions in the cervix or cavity.

Treatment of Asherman Syndrome

The physician may use Hysteroscopy to remove the adhesions within your uterus. During a hysteroscopy, a doctor looks inside your uterus. They use a thin instrument called a hysteroscope. This instrument can also cut scar tissue. You pass the hysteroscope through your cervix, into your uterus, and into your vagina. During this process, the surgeons remove the scar tissue with extreme caution. Removing the scar tissue may harm healthy tissue. It may damage your uterus during the procedure.

After the hysteroscopy, you may have a small catheter left in your uterus for a few days. You would also take estrogen. This will decrease the possibility that scar tissue could regenerate following the surgery. We will give you antibiotics. They will prevent infection around the incision of an intrauterine catheter.
