Ovulation and menstruation, both are regular cycles of a woman’s life. These are generally counted within a period of 28 days, referred to as a menstrual cycle. This first occurs when a girl reaches puberty. While ovulation occurs during the ovarian cycle, menstruation occurs during the endometrial cycle, and these two cycles occur simultaneously. This is a complex yet vital process that occurs in the female reproductive system and is essential to the ultimate potential for fertility and new birth. However, many people still fail to grasp and understand the key differences between ovulation and menstruation. To learn all about the two, continue reading!
Here are some key differences between ovulation and menstruation:
In the absence of pregnancy, menstruation occurs. It is the regular, cyclic discharge of the blood-enriched endometrium through the vagina. It is a normal, predictable, physiological process that basically results in the absence of fertilization. The secretion of FSH and LH hormones by the pituitary glands marks the onset of menstruation. FSH stimulates the growth of follicles in the ovary while LH stimulates the ovary to release an ovulate. If the mature ovum is not fertilized after the ovulation, it results in lack of progesterone levels in the blood. This triggers the discharge of the endometrium during the menstrual phase of the menstruation cycle.
Ovulation is the release of an ovum from an ovary. This occurs only once in every menstruation cycle. Irrespective of the length of the menstruation cycle, ovulation always occurs 14 days before the next menstruation. During the time of ovulation, there is an increment of cervical mucus secretion due to the increased levels of estrogen. During the ovulation period, the mucus pH increases and becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy fluid. This alkaline pH of mucus increases the sperm morality and longevity at this period. Therefore, this is the time in the cycle when a woman can easily become pregnant.
The main difference between ovulation and menstruation is the type of process and their role in reproduction.
