An obstetric ultrasound is a painless scan that creates live images of your baby using sound waves — no radiation involved. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, your doctor may suggest a transabdominal scan (transducer moved over the belly) or a transvaginal scan (used mostly in early pregnancy, before 10–12 weeks, when the uterus is still too small to see clearly from the outside).
Through the scan, your doctor can check the baby's heartbeat, position, amniotic fluid level, placenta location, and overall growth — and screen for certain developmental concerns at specific weeks of pregnancy.
Most women need 3 to 4 scans across a pregnancy, each timed to check different things. Here's how Femmenest structures them:
| Scan | When It's Done | What It Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Early Viability Scan | 6–9 weeks | Confirms pregnancy location, gestational sac, heartbeat, and pregnancy dating. |
| NT Scan | 11–13 weeks | Screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome. |
| Anomaly Scan (Level 2 / TIFFA) | 18–22 weeks | Detailed assessment of the baby's heart, brain, spine, kidneys, and limbs. |
| Fetal Echocardiography | As advised | Focused evaluation of the baby's heart structure and function. |
| Growth & Doppler Scan | After 30 weeks | Monitors baby's growth, blood flow, amniotic fluid, and placenta health. |
If an NT or anomaly scan throws up a finding that needs a closer look, our fetal medicine team follows up with further evaluation, and genetic counseling is offered where the findings warrant it.
