What is Diagnostic Hysteroscopy, and When is It Recommended?

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is a same-day procedure where a doctor passes a slim camera (hysteroscope) through the vagina and cervix to examine the inside of the uterus directly, without any incision. It's typically the next step when an ultrasound shows something unclear, or when symptoms point to a uterine cause that scans alone can't confirm.

Your gynaecologist may suggest hysteroscopy diagnosis if you're dealing with:

• Abnormal uterine bleeding — periods that are heavier, longer, or more irregular than usual, or bleeding between cycles
• Difficulty conceiving — to rule out uterine causes such as polyps, fibroids, scarring, or a septum before or during fertility treatment
• Recurrent miscarriage — to check the uterine cavity for structural issues that could be contributing
• Postmenopausal bleeding — to investigate the cause and rule out more serious conditions
• Pelvic pain or unclear ultrasound findings — when previous tests haven't given a clear answer

If polyps, small fibroids, or scar tissue are found during the examination, the same procedure can often move from diagnostic to operative hysteroscopy, treating the issue right then instead of requiring a second surgery.

How Does the Hysteroscopy Procedure Work?

A hysteroscopy at Femmenest generally follows three steps:

1. Preparation — You'll be asked to empty your bladder, and depending on whether it's diagnostic or operative, you may be given local anaesthesia, sedation, or general anaesthesia.
2. Insertion and visualisation — The hysteroscope is gently guided through the cervix into the uterus. A sterile saline solution is used to gently expand the uterine cavity, giving the doctor a clear view on a connected screen.
3. Examination or treatment — The doctor examines the uterine lining for polyps, fibroids, scarring, or a septum. If operative hysteroscopy is needed, small instruments passed through the same scope can remove the growth or take a tissue sample for biopsy.

The procedure itself typically takes about 15–30 minutes of operative time, and most diagnostic cases are done on an outpatient, day-care basis — you can usually go home a few hours afterward, once the anaesthesia wears off.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Not every irregular period needs a hysteroscopy. But it's worth getting evaluated promptly if you notice:
